HOT-ICU for Patients

In this trial we investigated if targeted oxygen therapy to a lower level than current standard of care resulted in a reduced mortality in patients with acute respiratory failure admitted to the intensive care unit.

  • We found no difference in survival between the two oxygen supplementation strategies.
  • We found no difference in the need for respiratory support, dialysis or circulatory support between the two oxygen supplementation strategies.
  • We found no difference in the frequency of clinically important adverse events between the two oxygen supplementation strategies.

The trial has contributed with important and substantial knowledge concerning targeted oxygen therapy in patients admitted to the intensive care unit with acute respiratory failure with low levels of oxygen in the blood. The results have been published in the prestigious medical journal The New England Journal of Medicine. Please follow the link to read the article.
